Botanical Names of Kale Varieties

So I got an email through KaleOil.com from someone suggesting I consider the botanical names of the varieties of Kale. These names are more universal which might be helpful. I have a feeling that we will be buying from the Middle East.

We are also testing seed oil percentages in a wide selection of varieties. It would be great if the Red Russian (Brassica napus subsp. napus var. pabularia) had the most oil because it is the cheapest seed so far.

Kale belongs to the species Brassica oleracea.

Here are some of the most common Kale varieties and their botanical names:

  1. Curly kale / Vates / Scottish Blue Curled - Brassica oleracea var. sabellica

  2. Lacinato kale / Tuscan / dinosaur) - Brassica oleracea var. acephala

  3. Red Russian kale - Brassica napus subsp. napus var. pabularia

  4. Redbor kale - Brassica oleracea var. acephala

  5. Premier kale - Brassica oleracea var. acephala

  6. Winterbor kale - Brassica oleracea var. acephala

There are many other cultivars of kale as well, each with their own unique characteristics and uses

note: ChatGPT wrote half of this! :) What an amazing tool!
